Your child's privacy

Plain-language summary of how we handle your child's information. This is a product privacy notice, not legal advice.

What we collect

The profile you create for your child (name, age, interests, goals, challenges), any school documents you upload or paste (such as an IEP or evaluation), and your account email. We do not ask for more than we need to give you the analysis.

How AI is used — and what it never sees

To produce the plain-language analysis and letters, document text is processed by a third-party AI provider (Anthropic's Claude API). Before any text leaves our servers, we automatically redact identifying details — your child's name, dates of birth, ID numbers, emails, phone numbers, and addresses are removed and replaced with placeholders. The AI sees "the student," never your child's identity. We restore the name only afterward, on our side. Our AI provider does not use API data to train its models.

Prefer that nothing is sent to an AI provider at all? The app can run in a local-only mode that produces a rule-based analysis without contacting any external AI.

How your documents are stored

Uploaded document text and its analysis are encrypted at rest using strong (AES-256) encryption. You can also choose, at upload time, to have us discard the original document entirely and keep only the analysis.

Who can see it

Only you. Every record is tied to your account, and access is checked on every request. We never sell personal data, and we never share your child's information with your school, advertisers, or anyone else.

Deleting your data

You can delete any document, any goal, a child's whole profile, or your entire account at any time. Deleting a child or account removes all related documents, goals, and progress.

This is educational support

IEP Companion helps you understand documents and prepare for meetings. It is not legal or medical advice and does not replace an attorney, advocate, or clinician.

Depending on where you live, laws such as FERPA, COPPA, and GDPR may give you additional rights over your child's data. Contact us to exercise them.
